Q: Help! Finder not displaying folders or contents
Hello everyone,
For the past few days, I have been having a terrible problem with Finder on my iMac (10.11.5) not displaying the contents of folders. When I open a folder in the Documents folder on the local hard drive, it displays only a few of the subfolders in it. The progress wheel spins forever. The other folders appear after a long time, but their contents do not. Still the spinning progress wheel. The same goes for my iCloud drive. In Activity Monitor %CPU finder usage spikes at 250 and the bird process, which I understand has to do with iCloud, hovers around 100.
The only thing I can think of that might be causing this is a folder with a large number of files that I uploaded to my iCloud drive about a week ago. The folder is about 500 MB and contains 132,000 files. I'm thinking that it is not the folder's size (500 MB is small) but the number of files in it. Maybe my Mac or Apple's server's are slow to catalogue so many files. The other reason I think it has to do with iCloud drive is that the folders on my iMac at work and my MacBook are slow to display their contents, and this coincided with my uploading the data folder to iCloud drive.
For now I'm going to move the data folder back to my local hard drive and see if things improve, but I would very much appreciate your thoughts on this. I like iCloud drive and would like to return to using it for my research data, but seeing the folders disappear like that is disconcerting.
Regards,
Gregory
