Q: iPhoto to Photos migration

I'm trying to migrate my large, and carefully curated, iPhoto library to Photos.  All photos seem to be moved, but the event structure is lost.  I do find the "iPhoto events" folder in Photos, but it's a mess.  Any suggestions?

In what way is this folder a mess?

It is supposed to have an album for each of your events, named like the event. Did that not happen?

Your events are converted to albums in Photos and stored in a folder named iPhoto events - there is no change in the organization and the event structure is not lost, just changed to albums

see  How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

What exactly are you seeing that you choose to describe as "a mess" - with no more information than that no one can help

Actually, both leonie and I are having the same experience.  I have two folders labeled iPhoto Events in Photos.  Both a patchwork when it comes to replicating my event structure in iPhoto.  Worse, though, is that many of the events have no photos in them.  So it's useless.  Can't find anything in Photos that faithfully replicates the events in iPhoto, which are the result of many, many hours of editing.

BTW, thanks to all for the help.  I'll keep at it, but I'd love to just focus on Photos, since there's lots to like about it, and since the handwriting is on the wall that Apple at some point will stop supporting iPhoto.

To be specific in my case, when I look at the sidebar in photos, I actually have two folders with the same name -- iPhoto events.  One has a subset of the events originally in iPhoto, but without any photos in any of these folders.  The other has better coverage, but generally just a few photos per event.  Neither replicates the event structure I had in iPhoto.  At this point, I have a lot of newer photos directly in iPhoto, so just erasing everything and starting over has little appeal, but could be done with a lot of work.  Ideally, I'd find a way for the folders in Photos "iPhoto Event" to suck in all of the photos from their respective folders in iPhoto.  My guess is that this isn't doable.

Perhaps the iPhoto Library has a corruption, when you migrated it to Photos, that prevented the proper migration.

If iPhoto is still running on your Mac, you could try to repeat the migration to Photos, but this time repair and rebuild the iPhoto Library, before you migrate it again. Make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library before your rebuild it.

    To rebuild your iPhoto Library

    1. If iPhoto is open, quit it.
    2. Hold down the Option and Command keys while you open iPhoto (click the iPhoto icon in the Dock). The Photo Library First Aid window opens.
    3. Image of Rebuild Photo Library window
    4. Click Rebuild database to rebuild your photo library.

Thanks!  I did rebuild the iPhotos library, so I'm in good shape there.  But is there a command required to re-populate the "iPhoto Events" folders in Photos?  That's what i think I need to be able to do.  It doesn't seem to be happening automatically.

    Huge thanks,

    Ted

Just updated from iPhoto to Photos.  When I select "iPhoto Events" from the sidebar, besides getting my iPhoto Events which I had named and saved, I also get other events that I did not create that are titled by a date.

How do I just get the actual events I had saved and named, without all the dated events which I didn't create?

You get all events converted to albums - there is no option to only convert the events I want  - if there are events you do not want right click on them and delete event
