Q: Double NAT & DHCP Error - Possible Bridge Issue

Help...

So this is my set up on a yacht...

I have a MacMini (running bootcamp Windows 7 Pro), so effectively it is a PC -

  • I use the MacMini's internal WiFi adapter to get my internet connection from various different marina's that I might be staying in
  • I then share the WiFi connection from the WiFi adapter with the internal LAN adapter
  • this allows me to share the marina WiFi with other devices on the yacht

I then have an AirPort Extreme -

  • I then run a CAT6 cable from the Ethernet Port on the MacMini
  • to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme
  • the AirPort Extreme now has an internet connection (from the marina WiFi)
  • I have then enabled the WiFi on the AirPort Extreme to create a private WiFi network on the yacht
  • and this gets its internet connection from the WAN port, which in turn comes from the MacMini, which in turn comes from the Marina WiFi

Connected to the AirPort Extreme are -

- iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple TV, a Smart TV, etc etc

- some devices are connected using the LAN ports and cabled to the AirPort Extreme

- some devices are connected by WiFi using the AirPorts WiFi

I want DHCP to be handled by the AirPort Extreme - so I have it mode set as "DHCP & NAT".

What is the problem -

  • The AirPort Extreme shows an error
  • 'double NAT and DHCP'
  • and suggests I switch it to bridge mode
  • but I don't want to do that

Any thoughts ?

Regards

Tim

Might help if we could get the exact message that you see.  You will likely need to change the DHCP range on the AirPort Extreme to a different value, then use the option to "ignore" the Double NAT so the AirPort will display a green light.

You will have to live with the Double NAT if you want the AirPort Extreme to act like an isolated router that provides a private network.

    Hi Bob

Many thanks for the quick reply... which got me thinking...

    - Why don't I just bridge the WiFi and LAN connections on the MacMini -

Did another search and found this thread from you...

    - Setting up NAT on Airport Extreme

    - I think this is pretty much the same thing

Do you think bridging on the MacMini will solve it ?

Unfortunately I am not in the yacht - and will not be for a few days - so can't test.

    Thanks again,

Sorry, but not sure what you referring to here. There is no "bridge" setting on a MacMini.

I am running Windows 7 Pro within BootCamp - sorry should have been clearer - bridge them within Windows (dirty word I know!).

Sorry, can't help at all on Windows, but I would be surprised if a "bridge" setting existed.

    Thanks Bob

I am sure it does in Windows - I think I will try that.

Thanks again for your help and quick replies.

    Kind regards

Another possibility that you might consider is a setup that I use when I'm traveling, and the only Internet connection available is wireless.

I set up an AirPort Express to "join" the local wireless network and then connect an Ethernet cable from the Express to another AirPort router that I use to set up my own private network.  Then, all my devices can connect to the AirPort router either using a wireless or a wired connection.

In effect, the AirPort Express acts like a wireless modem in this type of setup, so I don't have to mess with Internet Sharing or anything like that on a computer.

    Hi Bob

Check - that makes sense - I will try the bridge first - and if that fails - off to the Apple Store for an AirPort Express.

    Thanks again Bob.
