I am preparing a textbook with several figures and text.
After about 40 pages the file is 60 Mb but the problem is that every new page I create has a large X covering the page.
The large X also appear in the PDF export. In the iBooks preview, though, a small "?" sign appear on top left of the page...
What does it mean?
How can I solve this?

With your book open in iBooks Author try View > Show Document Warnings.
I expect you have a background image that cannot be located however hopefully the Document Warnings should give you a better clue.

In fact I did find 2 warnings telling me:
Missing File letterpress_paper_1536x2037-6.jpg
and
Missing File letterpress_paper_1536x2037-9.jpg
but I think I have never used such files in the document. I also searched my HD for them without success...
Is this kind of file an internal library file of iBooks Author that is for some reason messing?
Note that now I get this error on each new page I insert, regardless of the position where I try to put it. All the existing pages instead do not show warnings or large X over them.

If you tell us which Template you started with it MAY assist?
Does the error occur with EVERY new page regardless of which style of Page you are adding i.e is it only 1 column pages, 2 column pages etc... without knowing your template it is hard to guess.
