Q: Iphone Photo's: Can I delete on Iphone but will that delete them from iCloud Photos

I want to make sure that trying to save space on my Iphone or Ipad, I don't permanently erase photos on my iCloud Photo Library. I just recently migrated iPhoto to Photos and upped my iCloud storage to 200GB. My iPhoto Library is large (many years of photos) at 72GB. Since my Ipad and Iphone are connected to this iCloud photo library, I don't want to exceed memory on those two smaller devices (Iphone and Ipad). My MBP has plenty of storage and that was my main place to keep photos. Any suggestions on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

iCloud Photo Library is designed to adjust the size of the library stored on your device to the storage available on that device. But you must have "Optimize Photos" turned on under Settings>Photos. Here is a snippet from the first article I have provided a link for below:

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
  • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

    When you enable iCloud Photo Library, everything gets synced to all devices. That includes edits and deletions of images. Don't delete them from any device unless you want them gone forever!

     

    To conserve storage space on your iPhone go to Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud > and select to use an Optimized local library. Photos will then keep adjusting the resolution of the stored images, so you always have enough storage for other files. It's a slow task to optimize, so don't panic.
