Getting my messages to work again on my macbook pro

I was asked to update my apple ID password, and when I did my messages don't work on my macbook pro. When I click on it, all the messages say "offline". How do I fix this?

Try signing out of the app and back into it again for your same Apple ID that you use on your iPhone for iMessage.

Add or remove your phone number to iMessage or FaceTime on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Thank you. I was able to get into preferences and click on accounts and had to sign in again on my gmail account and is fixed the problem.
