May 31, 2016 3:06 PM in response to salconfusedby Jonathan UK,Hi
Whilst I'm afraid I cannot say why that occurred, unpairing and re-pairing your watch may help to address the cause. The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).

If you have not yet done so, it may also help to update your watch to the latest software:

If the issue later recurs, I suggest that you contact Apple Support or make a Genius Bar reservation, if necessary with a view to having your watch checked under warranty:

Jun 6, 2016 7:24 PM in response to salconfusedby Carolyn Samit,Hi,
"My watch went black"
Charge the battery for at least an hour then try a force restart.
To force restart your Apple Watch, press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Jun 7, 2016 2:03 PM in response to salconfusedby Cmbrook,Did any of these suggestions help? I have had my watch for 10 months and it was working fine this morning and went black as well this afternoon. I am trying some of these suggestions before I go to the Apple store and find out what is going on!

Jun 7, 2016 2:40 PM in response to Cmbrookby léonie,There can be several harmless reasons for the watch going black.
- If you forget to stop a workout after using the workout app, the battery may drain very quickly because of the frequent hear rate measures and GPS lookups.
- Or the watch may shut down, if the outside temperature is too high. If Apple Watch can’t regulate its internal temperature, it goes into Power Reserve or a deep sleep mode until it cools, see this help page: https://help.apple.com/watch/#/apd707b42a5e
Scroll down to "Operating temperature ":
Operating temperature Apple Watch is designed to work best in ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C) and be stored in temperatures between -4° and 113° F (-20° and 45° C). Apple Watch can be damaged and battery life shortened if stored or operated outside of these temperature ranges. Avoid exposing Apple Watch to dramatic changes in temperature or humidity. If the interior temperature of Apple Watch exceeds normal operating temperatures (for example, in a hot car or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time), you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:
- Charging may slow or stop.
- The display may dim.
- A temperature warning screen may appear.
- Some data transfer may be paused or delayed.
- Some apps may close.
Important: You may not be able to use Apple Watch while the temperature warning screen is displayed. If Apple Watch can’t regulate its internal temperature, it goes into Power Reserve or a deep sleep mode until it cools. Move Apple Watch to a cooler location out of direct sunlight and wait a few minutes before trying to use Apple Watch again. For more information, see support.apple.com/kb/HT204508.
