Our old mac is not compatible with the cloud. The new mac doesn't have the space the old mac had (ironically), so I can't transfer all the pics to the hard drive. What's the easiest way to get pics from the old mac to the cloud?

Get an external drive, set up the new Photos Library on that drive, enable iCloud, but keep the Library on the external drive. You should always have a local, full-resolution copy of your images in addition to iCloud Photo Library.

Is it possible to link them by usb and import as if it's an external drive? I'm worried about the old Mac crashing soon. I've been putting this off, started it up tonight and it's not looking good. 😟
Yes. Copy the entire iPhoto Library to the new drive.
If you can, update iPhoto to v. 9.6.1 first
The drive has to be formatted as Mac OS X Journaled (Extended).
