Q: All I can get to show on the iPad screen is a battery with a small red bar.  What can I do?

The only thing I can get to display on my iPad screen is a battery showing a very small red bar.  Without the cable, it also shows the symbol to plug it in.

What can I do, if anything, to get it to work again?

That may mean the battery is dead and needs to be recharged. Connect the charging cable to the AC charger that came with it. If you actually are seeing a white image of a cable pointing to an iTunes image that means to connect it to your computer. It's possible you will need to restore it. Or make an appointment at the Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar and take it in for service. You can also look for an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

I've tried charging it with the cable, but it isn't working.  I've tried two cables, both at wall and on a PC, with no success.  Yesterday I also got the Apple symbol from time to time but not today.

I appreciate the suggestion and will take it into the Apple store to see if anything can be done.

You might want to try cleaning out the charging port on the device. Dust and debris in the port is oftentimes the reason a device won't charge. Use a toothpick and gently clean out the port - especially in the corners. You may be surprised to find a lot of built up gunk. Once you have thoroughly cleaned it out, try to charge it again. Let it stay connected for at least 10 minutes to see if it will start charging again.

    Cheers,
