Q: heart rate not reading during workout mode

Check the following setting:
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Workout - if it is presently turned on, turn off Power Saving Mode.

Apple WatchHi Jonathan. I have just confirmed that my power saving mode is turned off. Any other suggestions??? I am very concerned. I wear my watch very snug during workouts and i ensure that my hand and watch is cleaned down. i also found that it takes ages to provide a reading even out of workout mode at times or it doesnt read and keeps telling me to try again.

Did an 80 minute run but it only started giving me readings about 20 - 30 minutes into the run. When i researched possible problems i found that it could have been because i was training when it was quite cold. So i didnt expect to have the same problem when i trained indoors last night.

Even under ideal conditions, the heart rate sensor may not be able to record a reliable heart rate reading every time for everybody, even when worn snugly on the top of your wrist, as recommended.
Wrist tattoos may affect performance, as may low skin perfusion (which can also be reduced when exercising in cold temperatures).

If you find that you are unable to achieve consistent readings, you may wish to consider pairing an external heart rate monitor / Bluetooth chest strap to your watch:

My phone software is 9.3.2 (13F69), and my watch is 2.2.1 (13V420 )not sure if these the latest versions.

It will not hurt (although it may not help) to also try unpairing and re-pairing your watch via the Watch app, choosing to Restore from Backup during set up:
If you are concerned about a possible manufacturing defect with your watch (eg a faulty sensor), you may wish to contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to having it checked (under warranty, if eligible):
