Q: External speakers not listed in sound output list

I have a set of Sony SRS-X3 bluetooth speakers which I use with a Macbook pro running El Capitan 10.11.5

Recently I have been unable to use them as they no longer appear under the OUTPUT list in sound preferences.

The device is connected and appears in the Bluetooth device list. I can even get to the sound preferences menu through the device tab.Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 5.07.24 PM.png

However the device does not show up in the sound output list.

I have tried the Command-option-P-R restart, restarting both the device and computer multiple times but cannot get them to work.
No idea why this problem started.

Speakers play sound fine from my iPhone and iPad.ciated

Any help would be appreciated

OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

A Bluetooth device can only pair with a certain number of hosts at a time, usually one or two. You seem to be trying to pair it with three.

The speakers can only pair with one host at a time. I am only trying to pair them with one host.

Do you have any other Bluetooth devices, and do they work?

Anyone found a resolution? From today both my bluetooth speakers stopped working with the mac. Exactly the same configuration - connected, but missing in the Output preferences.

OS is 10.11.5 (latest), on MacPro 2015

Speakers are UE Boombox and Harman Kardon Esquire Mini. They worked just until yesterday. No changes on the laptop done, nothing - no new programs, no updates, same network. It just went sleep yesterday and today the harman doesn't work. I use it as speakerphone daily.

Both speakers work on my iPhone, so they are ok. I connect them only to one device of course (either mac only or to the phone).

I tried several restarts, tried deleting the bluetooth preferences files.

BUT - on top of that - I found while testing that the AirPlay Audio stopped working as well - I can mirror the display, but sound is still on the mac.

The AirPlay IS indeed listed in the sound preferences, but I cannot choose it - clicking doesn't do anything. I haven't used it though for few weeks, so cannot say if it's connected to the bluetooth problem or separate.

It seems like the sound is stuck on the internal speakers/headphones (the headphone jack works)

Finally found a topic talking about the problem I seem to be having (since about the same date the op created the topic) but no answers yet.

I have a Fugoo speaker and a 66+ Audio headphone. Both worked flawlessly with all my devices. Out of the blue, none of them work with my Macbook Pro anymore. 13" inch Late 2009 running El Capitan.

    Someone pleeeease!!

This morning I installed 10.11.6 and while yesterday I confirmed my speakers still weren't working, this morning the Harman speakerphone works!

I will monitor it for the next days and will try other speakers, but so far I've done a long conference call with no issues.

Weirdly, for some reason I insisted on trying to connect the speaker again through bluetooth (after having used it connected through a P2 stereo cable) and it worked great! Don't remember if I had a system update inbetween, but I probably have.

I had the same problem with SONY:SRS-X3 and Macbook Pro El Capitan(10.11.6), and finally come to restore by pushing "reset button" on SONY:SRS-X3 and re-paring them.

Same speaker here, same problem.  It happens once a month or so.  I had to do a hard reset on the speaker, then restart my MBA (pairing to the speaker kept failing before I restarted the computer).

Just had this happen as well with the SONY:SRS-X3 speaker.

Hitting the reset button on the speaker solved the issue.
