I particularly want to save ichat/imessage/, photos and emails when backing up with time machine.  They are all greyed out on the page.  Can I reset? Thanks.

    Hi,

In Messages there is an option in the General Section of the Preferences to Save Chats on Close.

"On Close" means if you dismiss the chat, if you Quit the app or if you Shut Down with the app open.

These are then tucked away in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive by date

As ~/Library means the Library in you Home Folder and your Home folder is part of the Main Drive it's safe to say they will be in Time Machine.

~/ is the same as writing in full Hard Drive/Users/Your Account name.

Highlighted pictures in a Chat can look "greyed out" but other than that I am not sure what you mean. It would not make a difference to whether pictures were Saved of whether they were Stored when Time Machine did a Backup.
