Folder with question mark when starting up

Today, randomly, when I opened up my Mac (I always leave it in sleep mode) it just showed a white screen with a folder with a question mark. Tried rebooting, same thing. Then I tried to boot in recovery and went to the Disk Utility, but my hard disk is not listed there so I can't repair.

My warranty expired long ago, this is a MacBook from I think 2012 or 2013. I think my hard drive is fried. What should I do?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Hard drives can fail at any time new or old, so can other components. So, you should aways keep a current backup, because anything can happen at any time.

If you have another Mac available try starting up yours in Target Disk Mode:

Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support

it will allow you to see your machine as a connected drive. If that works, then you can at least backup your files.
