Q: slowing recordings in quick time 10.4

I need to slow voice recordings so i can transcribe them.  Garage band is too complicated, as are any of the other apps designed for music editing. I've tried quick time (Yosemite, quicktime 10.4) and although I can speed up the recording and hear it by holding option and clicking on either the fast forward or the reverse buttons, I can't get it to slow down.  Quicktime 10.4 does not seem to have an AV control bar.  It also doesn't do me much good if i have to be holding a button down the whole time (hard to type fast with one hand).  Any ideas?

Bring the audio files to iTunes. Select them, then Get Info (Command+I). On the Options tab, change the Kind to Podcast. The files should now be listed in the Podcasts section of iTunes.

Podcasts can be speeded up or slowed down. Both in iTunes and on your iDevices.

What range of speed control do you need? VLC playback has a range from 0.25x to 4.00x as seen below:

    Hi Rysz,

I was able to move the recordings into podcasts (including changing them in options), but there is nothing I can see in any of the tabs that allows me to speed up or slow down the podcasts.

Thanks Jon, but I was really hoping to not download any more software.  I'm not working with music, and my experience so far with additional software, like GarageBand, is that it is far too complicated for my needs.  VLC looks brilliant, but way more than what I want and I'm just not that tech literate.
