Photos for Macthat is impossible to just drag video or pictures into iMovies, but especially is impossible to just drag videos or photos into external hard drives or thumb drives, why?
Because when you drag a movie file from Photos to anywhere it gets converted to a .m4v file and that takes time. To get the original file format export the selected video/movie files via the File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original for x Video... menu option.

That will be much quicker than dragging. You need iMovie 10 in order to access the videos and image files inside a Photos library. If you're using an earlier version you'll need to start using V10 which comes with El Capitan.
