Q: Why does it take so long to import videos from Photos into an external hard drive?

I have noticed since I switched from iPhotos to Photos that is impossible to just drag video or pictures into iMovies, but especially is impossible to just drag videos or photos into external hard drives or thumb drives, why? Is there a solution or way to do it? I own a 2011 iMac

Time Capsule, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

that is impossible to just drag video or pictures into iMovies, but especially is impossible to just drag videos or photos into external hard drives or thumb drives, why?

Because when you drag a movie file from Photos to anywhere it gets converted to a .m4v file and that takes time.  To get the original file format export the selected video/movie files via the File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original for x Video... menu option.

That will be much quicker than dragging.

You need iMovie 10 in order to access the videos and image files inside a Photos library. If you're using an earlier version you'll need to start using V10 which comes with El Capitan.
