Folders Open on Single Click

Hello,

I have been experiencing an issue with OSX for several months now. I'm not sure if I noticed it before updating to El Capitan.

I have Finder set up to show items as folders/ icons. When I double click a folder it opens the the folder as expected. The problem is, if there is a file or folder in the next window in the same place, it opens with a single click. This becomes a problem when I am navigating through a series of folders and I am opening the next two folders with a double click or in the case of a file, it opens with a single click (usually it is not the file I want to open).

I hope I am making myself clear. I am usually pretty good at figuring these type of issues out but I cannot find a resolution for this. I have searched online many times with no luck. I'm not sure if this a glitch or a simple setting I have somehow overlooked.

Please let me know if I need to elaborate.

My specs are as follows:

27" iMac Late 2013

3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB Memory

Nvidia GTX 4GB

OSX El Capitan 10.11.4
