Q: I 'locked' myself out, couldn't load user after restart
Hey Apple Community
I was playing around with my settings, and I managed to get myself in the not so user friendly area. Then for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to see what would happen if I locked myself out of the Macintosh HD. I didn't think it would be a big deal, right? So the next thing I know, none of my functions work. The only thing I could interact with was the Safari because it was open... No other applications or finder would respond. Then slowly I noticed the icons on the top menu and the apple simple disappeared, along with my desktop icons. I decided to hard restart my computer, only to find that it wouldn't load my user. I would enter the password, it would load half way and get stuck. After an hour or so, I gave up and reset the computer again while going into recovery mode and just restored everything from an earlier date I had backed up.
My question is: what happen? Was there a way to restore the computer without having to use a back up?
I am using:
MacBook Pro (late 2012)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk: Macintosh HD (Realized I shouldn't play with this lol)
Thanks,
Nick
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
