Error 56 - iPad Air 2 WiFi

How do I address "Error 56" on an iPad Air 2 WiFi 128G when attempting to restore iPad to factory settings following a failed 9.3.2 iOS update? I am encountering the same issue that was reported on the iPad Pro models. I have already attempted to update and/ or restore through iTunes numerous time. I brought the device into an Apple store for service meeting with the Genius bar - who replicated the issue / Error 56 and recommended I attempt to downgrade back to iOS 9.3.1 from my home computer because he was not allowed to do that in the store. He said if reinstalling 9.3.1 did not work, I would need to replace the device because it is 1 1/2 years old. Attempts to downgrade or re-install the 9.3.1 software also ended in failure with the Error 56. The iPad is 1 1/2 years old. It is not jailbroken. It is not damaged or been damaged. It has not been submerged or exposed to water. It is only used on my home WiFi network. As of now - its an expensive paper weight.

Check for hardware issues

If you see error 53, learn what to do. If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:

  • 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16
  • 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
  • 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667 1669

Here's what to check:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Check for issues with third-party security software.
  3. Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  4. If you still see the error message, you can check for outdated or modified software or contact Apple Support.

I Had the exact same problem, updated my iPad Air 2 and when I went to check it had the iTunes logo and charging cable picture. Long story short ended up at the Genius Bar and they stated it was a hardware issue (yeh caused by their software) anyway they said they would replace it but it cost me £229 pounds. Mine was only bought in December 2014. Feeling very frustrated. I'm going to write s letter of complaint. I feel apple should have replaced it free of charge.

Exact same problem! My iPad Air 2 is 14 months old and was fine until trying to install update. Quoted £249 at Genius Bar for like for like replacement with 3 months warranty! Obviously a model exchanged by someone with the same problem then reconditioned. Good aftercare service Apple!! Totally appalled at Apple's stance on this problem that is obviously of their own creation.
