What worked for me was putting the headphone cable in the headset and iPod/iPhone and then increase the volume While playing a track then reconnect it via Bluetooth and it seemed a lot louder to me

We had to reestablish the connection by going into Settings>Bluetooth, selecting the device and selecting "Forget this device" and then re-finding the device. No idea why it happened, but this resolved the issue.
