How to ENABLE frequently visited sites in Safari?
Plenty advice about how to turn it off but not turn it on but I can find nothing how to re-enable it. I'm using OS X El Capitan, latest release. Thank you.

open "preferences"
select "general"
the second option "new window opens with" choose "favorites"
in Bookmarks check "show frequently visited in favorites"
Had the same problem after updating to the latest Safari version. The only thing that solved it was to restart my Mac. Simply go to Apple > Restart.
I have the same problem. My frequently visited site suddenly disappear. I have read every single article on the internet and tried every way but I still didn't get back.
P.S I am using Sierra latest version.
By now it’s clear that this is an Apple fail. Used to work perfectly and hadn’t since Yosemite. They should just own up and make it right. That’s what Steve Jobs would have done. In his words: it just works. Not so much anymore
Not sure but there seems to be some confusion as to "Top Sites" and "Frequently Visited Sites." In the accounts where everything is working if I right click in the pane under the Favorites there is an option to "Show Frequently Visited Sites." If this is clicked then the "Top Sites" or "Frequently Visited Sites" show as icons in a pane below the favorites and entitled Frequently Visited Sites. In my account although the option shows when I right click below favorites, nothing populates when I check it. If I select New Tab opens with Top Sites in Preferences, the Top Sites show fine, but no favorites. The real question is what is wrong with my account on this iMac that is preventing the lower pane from showing the "Frequently Visited Sites"
Here is what it looks like in the account that is functioning properly
Any thoughts??
Has anyone came up to a fix, or everyone has this problem with Safari 11.0?
Same problem -- No Frequently viewed sites in Safari after El Cap update and now in Sierra as well. Other account on same computer is fine. Have gone through the deletion of the topsites.plist and have totally reinstalled the operating system but cannot get it to work no matter what. Any suggestions? I do have safari synced with iCloud. Could turn that off and then back on. Any harm in that?
Have seen it and done all that. The "Frequently Visited Sites" pane does not appear below the "Favorites" pane. Only on my account on this particular iMac. Other accounts OK, and my account on other macs all on my iCloud sync are all OK. I've deleted Topsites.plist and allowed it to recreate, and the file changes as I visit sites but no show on the "Frequently Visited Sites" pane.

I see what is in Favorites and not the frequently visited. Couple of links in Favorites I last used last year, but the sites I visit several times a day or week are no longer to be found.

Yes, but do you see a drop-down box like the one I showed you? Take a screenshot using Shift + Command + 4 (it turns the cursor into crosshairs, allowing you to draw a box around a selection) of what happens when you click in the address bar on your computer. Paste the screenshot here. You can do this by dragging it from where it is saved to the reply box.
