Your message could not be sent

I'm trying to use my contact name in iMessage on my iMac to send a test text message to my Android phone and getting an error message 'Your message could not be sent - phone# is not registered with iMessage". Why am I getting this when trying to send a text to my Android phone? I'm running OS X El Capitan. How do I make this work?
