Q: Iphone 6S disabled after restart

My iPhone 6s alerted me to 2 new updates for my apps, but when I checked they were not flagged as "updates" but it said "open".

I could not get rid of these alerts, so decided to restart my phone.

Now, after it's powered up, it's asking me for my passcode. I enter this and it keeps rejecting it,, and my

phone is now disabled for 5 mins.

Interestingly, the screen that pops up asking me to enter my passcode is NOT the usual screen containing the 9 digits.. but

instead is a small keyboard positioned at the very bottom of the screen, that I can toggle between alpha and numeric chars??

anyone know what's going on here? 've never seen this before?  Thanks in advance for any help
