Apple TV

Q: apple tv on my Mac

The icon for apple TV appears on my top menu, but the only selection is "Open Display Preference." There is no option to open "Apple TV." I am using OS X El Capitan. The TV and my Mac are on the same network.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

You cannot setup TV preferences using the Mac.
On your Mac you can stream content to TV on the same network.
Tell us exactly what are you trying to do?

Trying to use TV as monitor, see computer screen on TV. Mirror computer screen on TV. When Airplay icon is selected, it does not provide a select "Apple TV"
option. All I can do is select "Open Display Preferences." In preferences Airplay is Off. No option to turn on??

Your profile says it's Mac OS X 10.6.3, is this correct?

The first step is not possible (see below #1), because I cannot choose Apple TV under "Connect To Airplay Display."

Click the AirPlay icon in the menu bar, then choose your Apple TV under "Connect To AirPlay Display." The icon turns blue when your Mac is using an AirPlay display.
