When I turn on my iPod a red X with a circle around it appears. Does anyone know what this means?

When I turn on my iPod a red X with a circle around it appears. I can't get it off my iPod. Any ideas of what I can do? I tried resetting the iPod but have had no success.

See iPod Displays a Red "X" Icon - Apple Support. Apple may no longer have much interest in servicing iPod classics. The line was withdrawn quite some time ago. See also Corrupt iPod Classic. You can try to get the stats, but my guess is that it will fail to open the drive.

See this recent post by Kenichi Watanabe: Re: My iPod Classic 160Gb won't register in iTunes which gives a link to a potential DIY drive replacement.
