Q: unable to open a PDF in iBook on older iPad 2

I have tried to open several PDFs using DropBox, then when it loads, clicking on "open in iBooks". This worked several times, taking a while for iBooks to finally open with the "saved" PDFs. It didn't work well if the PDFs were larger files. The next day, doing the same, it didn't go anywhere when I clicked on "open in iBooks". As an alternative, I plugged it into an iMac with the same iCloud account, opening iTunes, and clicking on Books was able to select Sync, and the files that were the same on my iMac were then appearing on the iPad. The next day, I wanted to add a few more, did the same syncing, and all of the PDFs disappeared from my iPad. No amount of dragging from a flash drive, going to settings on both the iMac and iPad, carefully selecting syncing, making sure the iCloud username and password were the same - I was unable to get anything to load into iBooks on the iPad, even thought there are 15 PDFs on the iMac iBooks. Both have up to date OS. The iPad is Model A1395. The iMac is newer. Suggestions?

iPad 2, iOS 9.3.2
