iphone se won't ring

Hello, I have an iPhone SE, about a month old. All of a sudden it won't ring through the speaker, nor can I hear the text notification tone when a text comes in. Aside from this, the speaker of the phone works fine: Speaker phone works, I can listen to music on the speaker, I can hear all calls and everyone on the other end can hear me just fine.

On the flip side, if the headphones are plugged in, I can hear the phone ring.

I have been googling and googling this problem and I have tried all the ready fixes:

Do Not Disturb is turned OFF
ringtone is turned up high

As far as the problem where the phone is stuck in headphone mode, I have tried repeatedly plugging and unplugging the headphones, also have tried twisting the headphone plug, neither of which did anything. Also, a side note, like I said, I haven't had this phone a month yet, and I had never plugged headphones in it before trying this. Also, this phone is in an otterbox defender case and the plug that protects the headphone jack was in place tightly.

I would think this was the problem of being stuck in headphone mode, except for I feel like if that were the issue I wouldn't be able to hear anything out of the speaker at all, and the external speaker works for everything EXCEPT for when a phone call comes in when it is supposed to ring.

It was working fine, until around the time it popped up that there was a software update available ( I was on ios 9.3.1 and 9.3.2 came available.) I did the software update, thinking that might help, and nothing changed.

Does anyone have any ideas at all what this might be, any help would be appreciated!!

iPhone SE, iOS 9.3.2, null

I just went through this headache, tried everything and then found the embarrasing answer. There is a small slider switch on the top left side of the phone just above the volume buttons. This mutes the ring and message tones. This should be in the foward position, closest to the front of the phone. If it is in the back position, closest to the back of the phone, rings and messages are muted. This must have got accidentally flipped when I was putting it in my pocket or something.

Hello cdbbbanks,

If I understand you correctly, you have an iPhone SE which is about a month old. You noticed a problem where you cant hear when the iPhone rings or when a text notification comes in but you can hear everything else just fine. You have ensured Do Not Disturb is off and made sure the ringtone volume is turned up all the way.

You have done some terrific steps and we have a couple that we can try as well. Let's go into Settings > Notifications > Messages and also the Phone section as well. Turn Notifications off for both. Once you do this, go to Settings > Sounds and turn the Ringer and Alerts volume all the way down.

With the above completed, please restart the iPhone using this article: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

When the iPhone powers back on, please go back into Settings > Notifications > Messages and the Phone section. Turn Notifications on for both and then go into Settings > Sounds and turn the Ringer and Alerts volume all the way up and then test. Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Tried all steps above. Still no sound for texts and incoming calls. Do not disturb is off. Tried the process you recommended and rebooted. Problem persists. Phone worked fine for 2 weeks then now only plays music and video audio no problem but won’t play sound for calls/texts. Seemed like the last software update from Apple the problem started. Any more ideas before I return the phone for a refund??

I am having the same problem with my iPhone SE. I did all the steps recommended but when texts come in I still don't hear the text notification and the sound is working and the volume is up high. Is there anything else that can be done to solve this problem? I know that it's not the speakers because when I play music and/or videos I can hear sounds clearly. From reading other posts about this issue it seems like it may be an issue with the updates. In the past I never had this problem, it happened after the last update.
