Q: Creating Shortcuts

Is there a way to create keyboard shortcuts across all Apple Works applications for symbols not already included on the keyboard viewer? For example: I often include ↑ in keynote presentations and would like to enter it by hitting a few keystrokes rather than have to pull up the character window every time. I typically use multiple characters as well and don't want to have to continually search, copy, paste, repeat. Thank you.

Try using the text replacement feature found in system preferences/keyboard/text

I've done that before, but it still takes time, ruins the flow in composing keynote/pages/numbers, and it forces me to "read code" since I'll use multiple symbols in a presentation/document and I have to decipher whatever text I use as a stop-gap. It just seems unusual that one can create shortcuts for menu functions but not for individual characters, or am I missing how to do that?

An alternative to using text replacement systems would be to set up a custom keyboard layout.  Two apps for doing this are Ukelele and Karabiner.
