Keyboard symbols do not match what is typed, for example type / but displays

When I use the keyboard the symbols which show on the screen are different to the keys I press. For example the € shows as ' and the @ symbols shows as ... Can anyone help, this happened whilst I was typing a letter.

Yes, they are different is just about every country.


So go to system prefs/keyboard/input sources and use the plus and add buttons to add Italian (not Italian typewriter) to the list, and then remove British. Hopefully that will match the hardware with the output.

thanks, I have now only British in the input sources and yes, I get a & sign and € with the keys you mention. I should have maybe explained better. I have an iMac which I bought in Italy. So the keyboard may be different, to get the € symbol, I used to press alt E, for the @ alt then @. Now alt E. Brings up ' and alt @ shows ... Hope this makes sense. I am just annoyed that I cannot get the keys to correlate to the display....what have I done?
