Q: How to enter my alphanumeric passcode in Touch ID & Passcode settings.

I recently got an iPad Air with Touch ID and Passcode. I have set an alfanumeric 6-"digit" passcode. I need to get into theTouch ID & Passcode settings, in order to change my Touch ID. I get a pop-up with 6 spaces and a keyboard below with large numbers and smaller letters underneath. I cannot figure out how to use the letters instead of numbers, or, in case I do figure that out - it's like an older phone keyboard, how to differentiate between upper- and lowercase letters. I cannot see what I'm typing, just dots. Can someone help? I don't want to wipe my iPad. I have my passcode, I just can't enter it.
