Purchasing the correct USB-C cable can be a bit of work. You need one that has the correct USB connector for your computer on one end and the USB-C connector on the other. In addition the cable must be capable of data transfer which all are not.
You should not need to restore an ATV with the cable. I have had multiple ATV's since the first in 2007 and never once had to connect it to iTunes to restore any of them.
