Q: Transfer photos Windows -> iPad

I have been editing pictures that I shot on an SLR and transferred to my Windows laptop.  They are now edited, and available as JPGs, and I want to show them to people.

How do I copy the pictures onto my iPad Pro 9.7?

On an Android, I would connect the tablet, open two copies of windows explorer, one on the tablet and on the folder containing the jogs.  Then I would drag from one to the other.  But I can't do that on iPad.

I'm posting this from home, but I frequently am doing this in theatres, where there is no internet access available, so it needs to be done using local wifi or lightning cable.

You can use iTunes, but you should also be able to plug your iPad to your Windows laptop and see the iPad as a digital camera, and be able to copy files both from and to the iPad as you would do with any other usb device. Did you try that?

    Several options:

    - use iTunes to sync the photos to iPad

    - use cloud storage to upload your photos into

That won't work. Copying only works in 1 direction, iPad to computer. You'll need iTunes to go the other direction, copy from computer to iPad. Btw, I'm a Windows user. I don't know if you can do it with Mac computers. I have never used Mac.

Good to know since it's long ago I don't use Windows. Then the DropBox, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Google Drive or any other storage system will do probably best.

I tried dragging the images onto iTunes, but iTunes gave me a message that "the file type is not supported by the iPad" (that's JPG straight out of photoshop!)

Most of the time, I don't have internet access to allow the use of Dropbox etc.

You probably aren't doing it correctly. Read this article: Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all your devices - Apple Support

You don't drag-and-drop, you need to connect the iPad to your computer and select it in your computer's iTunes, and then select its Photos tab in iTunes e.g.

    device iTunes 12 photos.jpg

That should let you select and sync folders from your computer to the iPad's Photos app.

Note that photos synced from a computer can't be deleted directly in the Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync - that means that you need to have selected on that Photos tab all photos that you want from your computer on each sync.

Thank you.  When I click the button you have circled. then click "Photos", I get a message:

    iCloud Photos is On

Alan's iPad can access photos in iCloud.  Photos can be downloaded to your device via Wi-Fi or mobile network.

Does this mean that I have to switch iCloud photos off in order to drag a few photos onto my iPad?

Thank you.  From the document, it's pretty clear that mine is not a use case that Apple supports.

I have my own opinion about that, but I'll leave that for another day...

If you want to sync them from your computer then yes.

I don't use a PC nor iCloud Photos (if somebody else on here does, hopefully they'll reply), but it looks like you might be able to iCloud For Windows to upload them from your PC to your iPad : Download iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

Use iCloud Photo Library on your Windows PC to download all of the photos and videos from your Apple devices to your computer, or upload your Windows Pictures library to iCloud.
