Certain files are left behind when copying a project. Why ?

When I copy a project with the purpose of backing it up on another HD, it leaves out the pictures, voice overs, music and also some video.

The point is: I want to back-up my project in one move, so without having to identify 'missing files', copying the folders with those contents seperatly and then relink them. How can I do this ? Why doesn't FCP bring all the files in ?

Hi Tom,

Now that my film is finished, I want to back it up. Just the film, so just one project, not all the other stuff which I don't need anymore. These are in let's call it my work-library.

So I have a new hardrive on which I made a new library for my final film. Now I copied my final film project from my work-library to the back-up library on the new drive. When doing this, FCP asks if you want to copy optimized and proxy media. I add optimized media, not the proxy media. But it only moves the video, not all the stuff I mentioned before, and it also leaves out a couple of clips, which were added later into the project.

Isn't that weird ?!

By the way, I haven't manage to solve the copy-paste problem either 😟. As a matter of fact, I have loads of stuff which I find odd in FCP, like how working in the secondary storyline, really differs from working in the primary if you want to use shortcuts. Could I make a list for you ?

Okay....guys. Maybe it has got something to do with the fact that my work-library sits on external HD1 and part of hte footage which i have impoerted into my work library sits on external HD2 ? Just thinking out loud. The 'newer' footage, which is part the footage that is left out, sits on HD2. It still doesn't make sense, because it doesn't account for the pictures which I have been using since the beginning....but maybe I'm on the right track..

Does FCP optimize pictures and audio, like it does with video ?

Hi guys,

I have made another copy of my library with that single final project in it,

on a second backup drive, let's call this drive HD4. I copied that from back up drive HD3.

On that first backupdrive, HD3, I have the library with that single final project I want AND all the seperate folders with the pictures, Voice-overs, music, logo's. (Which I had to copy from my work drive HD2 and relink to that single final project and what I didn't want to have to do).

When I open my project on HD4, it does not contain my pictures, mpg vidoe, music, voice-overs and so on. Only the AVCHD footage in which I shot most of the film.

I've looked into the contents of the library via the finder. What I see is this: for most of the (AVCHD) footage and some of the GoPro footage, not all, it creates a real movie file, the high quality media/Prores. In FCP I imported pictures (png, jpeg), audiofiles (wav), video (mpg). If I look into the Transcoded media folder and then into the High Quality media folder I see that these files are not being transcoded as such, but that they only get an alias. So they only have a reference to files in the pictures, movie, logo music and folders, which lie out of the library.

This is crazy.

I have always assumed that the library bundle contains ALL the footage you work with in your library and that copying a library or a project would include all these files, but apparently and unfortunately this is not the case. FCP X is supposed to make my editlife easier, not harder.

Also, having to move all these extra folders takes up a lot of space.

So what is going on ?

Yeah I see the files in the library bundle now, thanks Tom !

So these are some issue is haven't solved yet:

- I want to select part of the project and copy it in another project. It has to include connected clips/storylines. When I use in and out points, it only copies the primary storyline, not the connected clips.

- Is there a way to select the secondary storyline with a shortcut ? Let's say I'd want to make an in and out with shortcuts in a secondary storyline. How do I do that ? Or select an edit in a secondary storyline only using shortcuts ?

- Also how can I select for example only the video roles and title roles and leave out the soundrole, to copy it into another project (as you would do with tracks before).

- How can I select the videorole, which has camerasound attached to it, how can I select it, without the sound, in a quick and easy way, to copy it to another project ?

You can't really select an I/O that's in mid-clip. You can select clips, either by drag selecting, or by using the timeline index. The index lists the clips in the order they appear in the project. You can shift-click to select a range of clips and they're selected in the timeline.

You can't mark I/O in a secondary. To select an edit move the playhead to the edit and press either [ ] or \.

Don't know how you do those.

Hi Tom,

I'll look into that, thank you. The case was this. I finsished a documentary with all the music, interviews, camerasound, voice-over etc. All different clips/connected storylines. Then I exported everything via X2pro for ProTools. Then I had to put that final mix under the video and tiles and so on. Without all the old sound of course. And that's where it got very inconvenient.

It was too much work to either delete/mute all the sound or copy the video only to a new project to add the final audio mix. There should be an easy way, but I haven't fiugered it out. So I had to pull down the sound of each clip or a selection of clips individually instead of just delete the old tracks. Also you have to be very carefull that all the soundclips are deleted/ muted, that you don't forget one by accident..How would you go about this ?
