Q: Could not sign in to iMessage on Macbook 10.11.5

Looks like the last time this has been addressed here was 3+ years so I started this topic.

I have not been able to sign into Messages for a few months. In the preference pane there is no longer a box to check like there used to be under iCloud and Internet Accounts to toggle Messages.

When I open the Messages app and look at the preferences, iMessages is listed as inactive. When I sign in with my apple ID and password, I get the following vague error.

I tried to delete many of the .plist files in my Preferences directory which contained the word "Message" or "madrid" and restarted my system to no avail.

I tried to log in again as seen above and this is the log entries that followed if they help. The only other thing I can think of is to delete something out of my keychain, but I am not sure where to start.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Thank you for the assistance. I was able to log in to Messages while is safe mode, and remained logged in after restart. I have replugged in my external stuff and restarted again and still working. Thank you again for the assistance!

Hi,

Just a note.
This is in Mountain Lion at OS X 10.8.5
There never was nor has there ever been a check box in the iCloud Pane for iMessages of the Messages app.
You will also notice the lack of FaceTime, iTunes, iBooks, The App Store and the Gamer Centre

One reason is that you do not have to use the same Apple ID for iMessages as you do iCloud.
The other is that they can appear in the Internet Accounts as valid AIM Screen Names as well
In Mountain Lion this was called Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
