What model Mac do you have?

A Power Mac has either a G4 or G5 processor and can't go higher than 10.5.8.

I suspect yo have a Mac Pro and this may help:

How to identify Mac Pro models - Apple Support

When is the last time it went to Sleep? What have you install since then?

Does it Sleep is you select Sleep form the Apple menu?

If not try manually placing it I Sleep uses that option and not the time.

Then open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries at the time of the forced Sleep. Post suspicious ones here

Yes it is a Mac Pro 5.1 (mid 2010). The last time it went to sleep has been awhile, I wasn't paying attention to it, unfortunately. I manually try and put it to sleep from Apple menu, the screen sleeps but the computer runs constantly. I can not force the computer to sleep I have to shut it down to get it to quit, otherwise it just runs. As for what the console says, it's a very long list and I would not know what is suspicious or not. Most recently updated were iMovie Version 10.1.2, OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 and iTunes Version 12.4 These were installed mid-May 2016. And as I said no software is keeping it from sleeping.

Thanks for helping.

At the time you click on Sleep is there a log entry containing the word sleep or low power.

Also when you "wake" the Mac is there and similar entries?

My 2013 Map Pro also no longer sleeps but when I click on Sleep it does go into low power mode and when I wake it it goes out of low power mode.

The log entries contain the words "Telling CSI to go to low power" and "Telling CSI to exit low power"

Click on go > macintosh HD > library > preferences > system configuration folder .

In system configuration folder remove the two files

1. com.apple.powermanagement.plist

2.com.apple.autowake.plist

The reason for deleting these files is when issues are there in sleep , start up ,and shut down .

Now , restart the system from apple logo and empty the trash .By doing so a new fresh plist will be recreated .

Finally , open system preferences and reset energy saver preferences .

hey,

I have a similar issue here with my 2009 iMac since a couple of days. I tried to reset SMC, NVRAM and all of it. I reinstalled Mac OSX, I used a new user account, I removed all devices attached... very strange...

Within my account the log shows this:

04.06.16 12:36:03,965 AirPlayUIAgent[439]: 2016-06-04 12:36:03.965348 PM [AirPlayUIAgent] BecomingInactive: NSWorkspaceWillSleepNotification

04.06.16 12:37:52,599 WindowServer[208]: handle_will_sleep_auth_and_shield_windows: Deferring.

In the new user account it shows only:
