Q: Workflow using iPad in the field?

I am a wildlife photographer and usually bring my MBP and a Thunder drive with me when in Africa. I am trying to lighten my load and bring an ipad instead. But I need to keep 2 backups along with the cards. To my knowledge, I have not been able to find any third party storage solutions to EXPORT photos to. (lots of solutions to store and stream to the ipad.) I do not have internet access so no clouds. Does anyone know of, or better still, found a solution? Other than also carrying a Hyperspace photo reader for a second, isolated backup.

Also, if I use the ipad and camera connector and download my RAW files to Photos, it will display jpeg. No problem. But when I get home and connect to my iMac, how do I get the RAW files to import into Aperture?

Greatly appreciate any insights.

Thanks

Which iOS version are you having on your iPad?

Do you still have iOS 7 and iPhoto on the iPad, or the most recent iOS and only Photos?

With the newer iOS and Photos you will not be able to add any captions or tags to the photos on the iPad. It would be much preferable to bring your MBP.

But when I get home and connect to my iMac, how do I get the RAW files to import into Aperture?

When you connect the iPad to a USB port and launch Aperture, it will import the RAW files from the iPad. Just ensure, that RAW files are not excluded in the Import settings in the Import panel.

I do not have internet access so no clouds. Does anyone know of, or better still, found a solution? Other than also carrying a Hyperspace photo reader for a second, isolated backup.

I carried a backup drive and copied the card to the backup drive, whenever I could borrow a PC at a hotel or lodge. But that does not work well in many remote locations, where I cannot even be sure to have access to a power supply. I only tried once to travel without a portable Mac and never again. Only I replaced the 17" model by a 15" model that is not so heavy. A MacBook Air at least will be much more convenient than an iPad.

Added: How much storage is on your phone?  My Panasonic camera can stream the photos to both my iPad and my iPhone. That is o.k. for a few days as a backup, but not for long trip.

Leonie, Thanks for the thoughts. It would be the most recent iPad and OS

I have travelled to the bush in Africa 5 times with a 13" laptop. (I currently carry a 13" retina.) Yes, it is the most convenient, but I no longer want to have the additional weight. (15kg weight restrictions barely accommodate my lenses.) I don't need to add tags or captions. I basically need to view and delete bad photos, ensure I am exposing correctly and my sensors are clean etc. A MacBook air may be a solution but I'm not sure I want 2 laptops. If I am going to buy something I may as well buy something I can use and enjoy in my day-to-day.

Good to know about the RAW files. Seems like basic information someone in the Apple store should know.

I will fill a 32GB card every couple of days so a phone is not a solution. Plus, I use it for short videos. :-)

    Many thanks!

a 13" MBA weighs just a bit more than an iPad and it not a lot bigger

Power is a problem in Africa in my experience so you need 12 volt charges for devices so you can change from the vehicles

I suggest you use a 13" MBA and enough SD cards so you never have to erase any (for my last three 32GB SD cards were all I needed)

And you may have to pay a bit extra for more weight to meet your needs - there is no need to have the right lens is you can not save the image you shoot with it - You have thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of dollars worth of cameras and lens - $50 or $100 extra baggage charge so you can use them is a bargain  --  in my experience an iPad is not the answer (it probably is possible but I never figured out how to download RAW images from it  -  this was pre ICPL - now using ICPL  I think it would be automatic but slow with that many large photos once WiFi was available)

Have a great trip - it was one of our best

    Hi Larry,

I just tested again, just to sure that nothing changed.  Aperture is still importing the RAW files from my iPad 3 just fine. Perhaps it depends on the camera?

    What I did:

    • Set the camera (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330) to shoot RAW, not RAW and JPEG pairs.
    • Import from the card to the iPad using the camera connection kit (a lot of patience needed when reading a 32GB card!)
    • The iPad crashed when removing the card after the Import - that ids new
    • Connect the iPad to the Mac using the USB cable and launch Aperture.
    • In Aperture I set the Import presets like this:

    Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 16.47.25GMT.jpg

All Photos downloaded as the RAW files. So it still works like it used to.

On my iPad I disabled iCloud Photo library. My iCloud Library is too large for the iPad, and I prefer to sync selected albums to the iPad using iTunes. This way I can be sure to see the photos on the iPad at the best resolution, and I know which photos are on the iPad. I do not need internet to see them.

Leonie–thanks for confirming the RAW question. Very helpful. I also do not plan on relying on iCloud for photo libraries.

Larry thanks for your comments. I have to disagree though, there is a significant difference to me between the size of the laptop and the ipad in terms of my gear set up. I had the MBP with me the last 5 trips to Africa and I am trying to find another solution. Power is not an issue.

And I also always pay for extra weight   :-(

Like you, I do not reuse my cards. (Last trip was roughly 8 32 GB cards.)  There is the possibility of copying the images to an SD card as well for a second back up...

So, after researching yesterday it is looking like my initial question, is there a solution to backup an ipad without icloud or a mac available, seems to be no at this point. Which is too bad as it is a perfect "image viewer" for the field.

    Thanks for the help.

My problem with extra luggage would be, that I like to keep the important things (laptop, chargers, cameras, iPad, iPod, iPhone) in the hand luggage. And it is not always possible to have extra hand luggage.

I think, the more important problem would be to find a way to have a second backup your cards. It might be easier than backing up the iPad without a portable computer.I are, the iPad is a great image viewer while on the road. That is why I take both the MBP and the iPad with me.

Thanks Leonie. I am ok for carry on luggage. Apparently the sandisk connect will accept files from the iPad via the app. There is a 128GB stick or a 64 mini that also accepts an sd but have not found any reviews of real world use. I have also tested copying the CF cards to SD cards in camera on the 5D Mlll and it works. A little slow. I would not shoot dual, but rather copy after the fact. That would be 3 copies. My second body is an OMD EM 1 so not sure what I would do there.

Thanks again...I will keep searching. I have two weeks!

    Hi

I have the Sandisk Connect 64 GB which also accepts a 64SD, that I am trying and the 1T WD Wilreless Passport to try. The issue with the WD drive so far is it does not seem to allow you to copy to a specific folder but rather just dump the camera roll onto the drive. Not ideal as that will be about 6,000-8,000 individual files if I don't do a lot of editing and deleting in Photos first. (which I may or may not have time for) Not a very organized system. The Connect does let me organize a little better, but max's out at 64. Both are picking up the RAW files from teh iPad no problem.  I really want to find a solution to go light. :-)  The WD drive also allows you to dump SD cards directly through the SD reader. Have not tried it yet, but that could be a good back up for the Olympus SD cards.

That looks promising. I'm also looking for a solution to be able to get things done with solely the iPad, just in case my MacBook Pro gets stolen again while traveling or has hardware trouble. Hardware trouble always happens when the next Apple Store is several hundred miles away.

You know, when I travelled with my laptop I never had a redundancy other than keeping my cards. It is enough for me worrying about camera bodies or lenses failing! At a certain point I just have tro trust... :-)

It is no fun to discover the MacBook Pro has been stolen right after leaving the airplane.

Or to find out after a series of kernel panics that the logic board needs replacing. Both has happened to me out in the field., when the only mode of communication left was my iPod touch. that s why i am thinking of taking the iPad along the next time as a backup.
