Q: Macbook pro unusably slow - Apple premium resellers can't even find the issue

Hi!

After I updated my OS X to Mavericks (like one year ago) my Macbook pro late 2008 started to run really slow. I'm currently running the 10.9.5 version. At the startup and for the 5 first minutes the computer works fine, but after approximately 5-10 minutes the computer starts to run really slow. For instance, I am currently only using safari with two windows open, and 100 % of my processor is being used while the fan is running wild. If I for example would open Microsoft word now I would even have a delay on every letter I write, so the computer is practically unusable. This means that the computer must be restarted every single time I have to do a new task, or even open a new website...

To resolve this problem I went to an Apple Premium Reseller. They told me that my problem probably was that something had went wrong during my OS X upgrade from Applestore, so they tried to reinstall Mavericks on my HDD but the problem remained. Afterwards they made a scan through the computer, which showed no signs of problems. So, since the Apple Premium Resellers couldn't help me I tried to fix it myself:

  • I updated my ram from 1gb to 8 gb. Still the problem remained.
  • I updated my HDD to an SSD and installed a fresh Mavericks 10.9.5. Still the problem remained.

Any ideas of what can fix this computer? Before I updated my HDD to an SSD I tried reseting PRAM, SMC etc. but nothing seems to work! Please help me, otherwise I will have to go back to using PC's again until my studies are over!!!

Best regards

Marcus

    Hello tasteit,

The only thing you can do is find a competent Apple reseller or service provider. Don't go back there. Your machine obviously has some kind of hardware failure. Something is causing it to run too hot, that sends the fans to high speed, that will also cause the processor to slow itself down to prevent overheating.

Does the machine actually get hot within 10 minutes? It is probably a logic board failure which is expensive to replace. But it could be something like a faulty temperature sensor which would be a bit cheaper. It is an 8 year-old machine. Don't put too much money into it.
