Jun 4, 2016 11:27 PM in response to trukkurtby jndupuis1,Hi,
I won't go into long details, but, my MacBook Pro (late 2012) pulled the Thermal Runaway stunt as well. Fan sounded like a turbo jet. Try this: first disconnect or make sure you have nothing connected to USB, Thunderbolt, etc. Shutdown your MBP. Let it sit - no charger connected to cool if needed.
NVRAM reset. Hold down Option, Command, P and R keys and press power. Continue holding Option, Command, P and R wait for the startup "bong" and let cycle 3 times, then release the keys and allow your MBP to boot into OS X. Shutdown.
Now do SMC!
Plug up MagSafe wait a few seconds then hold shift, control and option and press power - hold for 15 secs or so then release all. Light on MagSafe may flash green then back to amber.
I realize you may not need the detailed instructions, but I am explaining what steps I took. I did not power my MBP up until next morning when it was fully charged. Overheat went away and it ran normally again. I had to verify some settings in System Preferences it seemed all was okay.
Cheers!!

I assume that you have a temperature/fanspeed monitor installed.
Open Activity Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When your MBP gets hot, post images of both for review.
Run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not concllusive.
Open the MBP up and inspect for cleanliness. Clean out any dust or dirt that you may find.
Ciao.
