iMac stopped recognizing Superdrive

I have a late 2013 iMac 21.5 (os 10.11.5). I purchased my superdrive at the same time. Recently, the iMac does not fully recognize the Superdrive. It show up as a remote disc in finder, but it will not eject the CD, nor will it play music, if an audio cd. I tried to import songs from the drive into iTunes (12.4.1.6) but iTunes does not recognize the drive.

I've checked the settings in system preferences, but they all seem to be set properly, i.e., to start iTunes when CD is inserted, etc.

As a side note: I recently installed Roxio Creator NXT 3, but have disabled the default settings as they relate to the Superdrive. As it stands now, the only way I get any response from the drive such as ejecting a disc, is thru Roxio.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
