Subtitles, do you want 'em, don't you want 'em? Check Accessibility to turn on/off, Audio (oddly) to select language. Use info (pull down) while playing to control while playing. If you need more, please explain and identify ATV version, see Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support because they're all different.

Thank you Diana. Actually problem has reoccurred.  I have put the two settings in Apple TV under accessibility to English; the problem seems to be that despite the tick in CC showing when using the Apple TV remote, (it is ticked CC) "subtitles" defaults back to "off" when playing (off has a blue frame around it) even though the tick against CC remains.  No amount of clicking it back to CC has any effect. The subtitles themselves are showing on the iPad before switching it to ATV but don't show up on the TV screen.  The model is 2nd gen ATV.

Please describe your problem with subtitles. Your first post just used the word.

You may need to find someone with an ATV 2 who knows exactly how the menus work.
