JOE DE VILLIERS

Q: do I need to replace my mac?

can I speed up my mac or should I get a new one?

My mac has become really slow. Even if I have the minimum of applications running....

I have cleaned it up, and now have 163 GB free disk space (of 639,28 GB).

I am on the max memory I can install on it (so I am told) -  8 Gig.

10.11.5 EL CAPITAIN

24" early 2009

2.66 HGZ intel core 2 duo

NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB

Is my system becoming redundant with the increasing requirements of the OS, etc?

Do I need to replace my imac or is there some way of getting some more speed out of it?

I have run "first aid" on the HD.

thanks for help.

Joe

Sometimes poorly written or incompatible software can cause a computer to slow down. Run and post an EtreCheck report and we"ll see if we can offer some advice  http://etrecheck.com/

Uninstall Sophos https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120838.aspx It is not necessary and is likely the cause of your slowdown.

Uninstall the Blackberry software as your version is incompatible with El Capitan and has been a known offender. http://support.blackberry.com/kb/articleDetail?ArticleNumber=000018771

    Restart after the removals.

If you haven't determined yet your problem is adware...lots of adware. It's probably easiest to download and run MalwareBytes http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php And restart after removal.

If you want to find and remove the files youself you can try Apples instructions Stop pop-up ads in Safari - Apple Support

In the future instead of a "me too" post you should start your own threads.
