It was the failure to link with iTunes. However your reply prompted me to explore another avenue which gave me the solution. My McFee Security has also had a recent upgrade and it turned on its Firewall I have now switched it off and the sync with iTunes now works fine. (I am protected by the Macs own firewall.) Success.
