Sites can use JavaScript to popup messages like that.

It may be that you've chosen a weak password and are being required to update it or this is a company device and there is policy to enforce password changes now and then. As long as you make a change using the settings widget on the device you're not supplying credentials to some third party so it should be safe to do so.
