Hotmail emails not downloading on iMac desktop Outlook for mac or Apple mail

Emails going to my hotmail account are not being downloaded onto my Outlook for mac or Apple mail on my iMac desktop.


I get the following error message

"Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="ProxyNotAuthenticated" AuthResult=0 Proxy=HE1PR10MB0491.EURPRD10.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM:1995:SSL]


Could not retrieve mail."


However, I don't have problems in downloading these emails on either my iPad or iPhone.


Without deleting the account (I will lose all emails received) what can I do?

obviously Microsoft has recently changed the settings to all hotmail / Live-Mail / Ooutlook.com - accounts to POP is not allowed generally


To get your system working without any change to the settings of your devices do the following:

Log into the website of your mailaccount (https://login.live.com/) and there go to the Mail-Settings >> OPTIONS of your account. Change to E-MAIL >> ACCOUNTS >> POP & IMAP (https://outlook.live.com/owa/?path=/options/popandimap)

There you have to (re-) enable the POP Feature and

to allow apps and devices to delete mails within outlook.

Save these settings.

check yout mail-program


A last part that might be necessary in your devices is to change the POP-Server to pop-mail.outlook.com.
