From what you've said so far, your son's texts are coming in to your iPhone and you get Notifications for them, but when you open the Messages app to read them, they disappear. If you haven't yet, I would try force closing the Messages first, try getting a text and then restart the iPhone.
To force close an app, Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod ... - Apple Support:- Double click the Home button so you'll see all your open apps.
- Swipe left or right until you see the Messages app.
- When you see it, swipe up on the card for Messages to close it.
- Press the Home to get back to your previously used app or home screen.
After that, have him try texting you again and see. Then if that doesn't change things, restart the iPhone.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
- Hold down the Sleep/Wake button on the top right of the iPhone.
- When "slide to power off" appears, swipe it to turn off.
- Press the Sleep/Wake button again to turn the iPhone on again.
Then test the Messages again.
If neither of those work, check out this article, If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support and post the iPhone's iOS version in Settings > General > About.
Kind Regards.
