Q: server 5 mail multi domain

Hi,

I have been trying to setup multiple domains for mac os x server 5.0.15

DNS is set up for all the domains and MX records are working fine. I want to create 2 independent mailboxes with the same name but different domains. lets call them example@domain1.com and example@domain2.com

Each user should be able to login to their respective mailbox and receive or send email.

I have tried creating different users (ie user1 and user2) and adding a virtual alias for each as example@domain1.com and example@domain2.com but this way I can only login as user1@domain1.com or user2@domain2.com but not as example@domain1.com or example@domain2.com

The only thing working right is that If I sent an email to example@domain1.com, user1 is receiving the message and if a send to example@domain2.com, user2 receives de message, but I cannot login or send mails from example@domain1.com or example@domain2.com

I hope that my question is not too confusing.

Have a look at Re: 2 or more info @ different domains for the answer provided by pterobyte

He has also written a setup guide to that effect many moons ago.

We are wanting to do this as well for a large multisite. We want to have the same users across multiple sites with separate email boxes.  user1@domain1 and user1@domain2, etc

Unfortunately, the instructions linked above are for much older versions and do not apply to Server 5.

Those features simply are not there.

Has anyone figured out how to do this specifically with Server 5?

Thank you. I have read the guide. It is for an older version of OS X Server but it helped me. I'm still doing additional tests but using the guide and playing with the client side configuration I have managed to make it work. Some things are not working exactly as I need them, but it may get the job done.

    BlueBiker706,

I am working with Server 5 and it seems to work (not as I would like) but I have not tried all the alternatives.

After some trial and error, I figured out how to do this for my own setup.

Basically, I wanted the same thing:

    user1@domain1.com

    user1@domain2.com

I wanted these as two independent mailboxes, not as the same one.

It turns out to be quite easy - it's ALL done under "Users" in Server.app. (I spent hours reading about virtual email hosts in os X, couldn't find anything relevant to Server 5, and eventually just tried the GUI ).

Create TWO users, each with a unique name like this:

    user1_domain1

    user2_domain2

It will create some weird default email addresses for these, unless you want those, delete them.

Now, add the correct email address to each one under "Email addresses"
    user1_domain1: user1@domain1.com

    user1_domain2: user1@domain2.com

Then, for logging in/authorization, make sure to use "user1_domainX" (where X is replaced with the right one) as the username, NOT the email address.

I am using this from an OS X Mail.app client, and it works fine (beware: if you try to set it up using "Settings -> Internet Accounts -> OS X Server Account" that is broken - just add it as a generic email account using your host name (could be domain1.com or whatever) and your username and password.

    Yay!

After a decade of a love/hate relationship with OS X Server, it has been turning more and more to love lately <3
