Apple TV Freezing while viewing TV program

I have the 4th Generation Apple TV, and after several hours of viewing the picture freezes. I am currently only using 3 apps (NBC, ABC, CBS), and it freezes across all apps. I have been informed by Apple Care Support that I should close all apps after viewing, but even this isn't helping with the freezing. At this point the only way to unfreeze the device is to do a restart by pressing the two buttons beneath the trackpad on the remote. Of course unplugging the device also works, but this is too burdensome to repeat multiple times. Apple Care has suggested there might be a hardware problem with the device and it might need to be replaced. Anyone else having this problem?

When using an app and the picture freezes, press the TV icon button twice quickly and see if the ATV responds.

It should switch to a mode which shows all the apps running. If it does, swipe up on all the apps to force quit them and see if it takes you back to the main menu and acts normal.

It is possible the apps may be crashing and freezing but this should not cause the main operating system to crash.

When quitting an app it actually continues running in the background. Everytime I quit using the ATV for the day, I force quit all the apps using the TV icon key and swipe up to fully quit the apps.

If the TV icon double tap does not respond, your main system is crashed. Do the restart and do a factory restore of your system software to eliminate any software corruption.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Sounds like the ATV operating system is crashing. You may well have a hardware problem. Before you return it, restore it:

Restore your Apple TV to its factory settings - Apple Support

Make sure you pick restore and NOT reset.

This will erase and reload all the system level software. You will need to go through the setup process you did when new and reload and setup any apps you downloaded.

If at that point you still have the issue, I would exchange the unit for a new one.

Are you suggesting that using my Airport Express as my wireless device might be the cause of the picture freeze? I am not a windows users. Also are you suggesting that the Apple TV 4th Generation should not be near a TV (an electrical device)? It is 15' from the microwave, 10' from my wireless printer, the only electrical device it is near is the Sony Bravia TV. You do understand that I am describing an inability to use the device totally because of the freeze, correct? I cannot watch a movie, or podcast, or open any app I have downloaded when the picture freezes.

I'm suggesting you may be suffering from interference, it's not guaranteed but it's the most common cause of Apple TV issues.

Yes the Apple TV can be too close to a TV, but in many cases it's being sat on top of another set top box or similar that is problematic. A microwave, cordless phone etc can be much further away than 15' and cause interference and yes interference can cause corruption on the Apple TV and cause it to crash.

I suspect from the manner of your response you have some doubt about this, it may be something else of course, but interference certainly is a candidate, you might start by trying the Apple TV in another location and seeing if the problems persist.

I have been quitting each app I open before I open a different app using the method you describe. However, when the screen freezes, quitting an app does not free up the ATV. When the ATV freezes, it will shut itself off if I am unable to open an app within the 15 minutes I have allotted. When the picture freezes in one app, all apps are disabled. This causes me to believe that the app has NOT crashed, but something is wrong with the ATV. As I previously stated, the only electronic device near the ATV is my Sony Bravia TV and the many electric outlets and ceiling fixtures located within my home. When the ATV freezes, the only way to view anything using that device is to do the reset by pressing the home button and the menu button simultaneously for 15-25 seconds. This restarts the device, and I am able to open any app I have installed. Force-quitting an app does not allow me to open any app on the ATV and view programming. This has been an ongoing problem since setting up the ATV on 6/1/16.

The devices you have stated may be enough to cause interference and you never mentioned neighbouring networks.

You may indeed have a faulty unit but since you say it takes sometime to occur it may be difficult to have it properly tested at an Apple Store. You possibly shouldn't have to, but as I've already said try you would be best testing it in another location (a friends house for example) if it doesn't do it there it's your environment that is causing it, if it does it is likely a faulty unit.

Just asking, have you updated to the latest tvOS version 9.2.1? You can see the version in the General>About settings.

Did you power cycle ATV after the update?

Do I understand that when it freezes you can still force quit apps (so it's not really frozen)? But any other app you start cannot display anything (menus e.g.), or cannot play video? If everything works except video playback, you may be having trouble with the HDMI connection, due to HDCP copy protection. Try disconnecting and reconnecting both ends of the HDMI cable from ATV to TV. I assume there's only one cable, no other boxes involved.

Within 24 hours of installing the ATV, it froze for the first time. At first it was thought that because I had chosen Aerial as the screen saver, it might be the reason for the freeze. (Apple Support told me to change the screen saver to Apple pictures and to choose never as the how often to download, to reinstall the update (something I had already done 24 hours earlier when I turned on the ATV)). I do have a the most recent version (9.2.1). I did a restore to reset the device to factory specs, and it froze again. When I say freeze, this is what I mean. I'm watching a video in CBS or NBC or ABC app and the picture freezes on a frame and will not move. So far I have only been viewing TV shows on those apps. It always freezes during the program - after the middle of the show. Pushing pause twice does nothing. Pushing the menu button does nothing. Pushing the home button does nothing to free up the program. I get a swirling circle and then a black screen. At this point even the screen saver (Apple pictures) does not work. I cannot switch to a different app. At first I unplugged the ATV. Apple Support told me how to force-quit an open app, and I have been doing this ever since the second day of use, but it continues to lock up. When I am finished viewing an app, I force-quit that app, and put the ATV to sleep. I do not have a cable box or a cordless phone or a microwave near the device, but of course being a home that is on the grid, I do have numerous electrical outlets near my ATV. When it locks up, the only working solution at this point has been to press and hold the menu and home button simultaneously for 15-25 seconds, until a flashing light appears on the ATV. At this point it resets itself, and I am able once again to get into any of the 3 apps I have installed at this point. I'm not adding new apps until I figure this problem out. Apple manual also says I could unplug the device, but this is too burdensome for me to do every time it locks up on a frame. So far when it locks up, I doing a force-quit of an app doesn't free up the device. It takes a reset to allow me to again view videos within the apps. I do not have any of my pictures on the ATV. I have not purchased movies within iTunes etc. I am just trying to make it work using CBS all access, NBC and ABC apps. I bought this device to avoid cable, but if it won't work with simple apps, I can't imagine that Acorn and Netflix will work either. They are the real reasons I wanted the ATV. Thanks for all the suggestions. Do you all really think it is interference with the wi-fi??? I am using an Apple Airport Express connected via ethernet to my ISP's modem (not router), but the ATV is connected wirelessly to the Airport Express.

I don't think it's 'definitely' anything, however interference is regularly a problem and these forums are full of people who return equipment only to find the same problem occurs on their replacement. I guess what you do depends on what is convenient for you, but I'd be looking to test this in another location so you swap out the TV, the HDMI cable, the environment and the network.

So, when it locks up, pushing the Home or Menu buttons does nothing. And you cannot double-click on the Home button to force quit the app, is that correct? So the only action that works is to restart using the remote? And restarting always brings it back to normal?

If the above are true, I'd agree with Vinceassociate that the device has a fundamental flaw, maybe part of the memory not working or something. Go for a replacement. That should remove ATV as the source of the problem.
