My current setup with a 2013 MacBook Pro is running it in closed-clamshell with three external monitors (Acer v223w). Two monitors are connected via an Apple DVI to Thunderbolt adapter to the MBP. The third monitor is connected via an Apple DVI to HDMI adapter.
When I unplug all three monitor adapters from my MBP, the two connected via DVI to Thunderbolt go into power saving mode, which is perfect. The monitor connected via DVI to HDMI, however, stays on and scrolls "Cable not connected" across the screen. It seems that the DVI to Thunderbolt adapters send some kind of signal to the monitor which force it to go into power saving mode when unplugged.
How do I get the DVI to HDMI adapter to behave the same way? They are all Apple adapters, so I assumed they would all work the same way.
