mail not sending-receiving

I have been on with my ISP for an hour, she went through everything on my mac pro and ipad. Everything is set up correctly.

I cannot receive videos that are only 900kb, cannot receive certain emails, this is an intermittent problem and cannot be duplicated, I have one in my ipad from 5/16 that won't go out no matter what I do. Regardless of the iOS version, why would some emails be selective and others not? I am using optonline wi fi. Sometimes they send, sometimes not. Sometimes receive mail, sometimes not. I have one going to gmail that will not send, even if I change the address. The same happens with my mac pro mail.

Error Message: "unable to send Email b/c (my email was rejected) by the server b/c it does not allow relaying.

Suggestions, other than deleting email?

Everything is correct. ISP tech support came on to my computer and verified, they talked me thru the ipad. all correct. All but one went and now nothing goes one either the computer or ipad. There is one that won't send will not go out no matter what address I try to use. I have no idea why this is happening. I am waiting for work to come in and this will be a disaster.

That error message (relaying) tells me that you're trying to use an SMTP server without authenticating first.

Can you post the settings that you think is correct?

NOTE: DO NOT POST your real email address. CHANGE it to something else (for example: my-email-address@ optonline.net) and of course do NOT post your password. You can post the rest of the info like server name etc.

Is this the only error message you receive? If so, this error is generally seen when you are trying to use one network to send something on another network and they identify this as a relay. Something like trying to use someone else's network to send something with your network address. This used to happen when trying to send something years ago in Comcast mail and you were not on their network. It is a security issue. Does your mail provider require SSL in their mail setup? Does this happen when on certain wi-fi and not others? Then if you use SSL, you have to identify the type of authentication, if it is password or something else.

Incoming (POP3) settings look good. Just be sure the user name is your full email address (user @ optonline.net - without spaces).

Outgoing (SMTP) settings should be similar to incoming with different port number. That is, server name: mail.optonline.net, port number: 587. SSL off.

If you'd like to be sure nothing is blocking your connection to mail.optonline.net server, do a connectivity test by using Mac terminal. The commands are:

telnet mail.optonline.net 110

telnet mail.optonline.net 587

The first command is to test POP3 connectivity. You don't have to do anything else after typing the command, pressing enter and waiting for server response. You can terminate terminal and test the second one. The second command is to test SMTP connectivity.

Post the result here.

Edit or mask your user name (like this c****). I just need to see the following:

Connected to mail.optonline.net.

Escape character is '^]'.

+OK optimum.net POP Service

That tells me your connection to mail.optonline.net (POP3) is good.

Do not continue to type after entering the 1st command (telnet mail.optonline.net 110) and pressing enter. You must exit terminal window and go back into terminal to test the 2nd command (telnet mail.optonline.net 587). If your name shows up, mask it.

Your connection to both incoming (POP3) and unencrypted outgoing (SMTP over port 587) mail servers are good.

Be sure to enter your login credentials correctly. Passwords are always case sensitive. If you are absolutely positive they are correct then the problem relies on your device or your mailbox.

If you have a stuck mail in the Outbox and no matter what you do, it just won't go out. Delete that stuck mail. Clear out everything that is stuck in the Outbox. Retry sending and receiving.

BTW, I just installed Thunderbird and it's working like a charm. The problem is, it doesn't have an ipad app. Something isn't right with mac mail.

Ok so that leads me to believe Mac mail is the problem. Make sure that all Mac OS X updates are up to date. You can also start over from the beginning, remove the mail account, restart and add it back in.
