Presenter notes appear on external display. Following Help: I click on Play Button, Layout Button is not on screen ( slide only appears full screen-no toolbar).

The presenter notes appear on both the computer screen and the external display.
Do you mean this shows only when editing keynote, you are not in Play?
If so: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays; de-select the mirror displays option as below:
