Expanding Mac Pro Mid 2010 Graphics Card

Hello, I'm currently using a Mac Pro Mid 2010 with a ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphic Card. I would like to upgrade it for a better one, but I don't know what will fit my Mac. Any suggestion?

My specs:

Memory RAM: 128GB

Processor: 2 X Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.4GHz

OS: OS X El Capitan

Drive: SSD 1TB

Graphics: ATI Radeon 5770 1024 MB

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), null

Keep in mind power requirements, as well as making sure you get a card that is "Mac compatible", some of them are called "Mac Pro Edition". These have the BIOS flashed so you get video when you try to boot the machine into recovery mode (Pre-OS). The alternative looks like you have to stare at a black screen until the system boots to the login screen, which to me would be really annoying.

A couple routes that come to my mind immediately:

  1. Buy another 5770. You can Crossfire them and run both off the stock PSU (just need another 6pin power cable for the new card + crossfire bridge)
  2. Swap and upgrade to a Radeon 7970 which offers a Mac Edition (3GB onboard GDDR5), seems like a very nice upgrade for a lot of people.
  3. Buy some different Nvidia Geforce equivalent card. 😟

Happy hunting!

There was never an official Mac edition of the Radeon HD 7970, there was an official Mac edition of the Radeon HD 7950. It is possible to do a DIY flash conversion of the 7970 to make it effectively a Mac edition.

I do not believe Crossfire or SLI is possible in OS X but would be possible in Windows via Boot Camp. This is down to the Mac drivers.

For the benefit of the original poster if your using Apple's Final Cut Pro X then an AMD card like the Radeon HD 7950 or 7970 is a better choice, if your using Adobe products and I believe DaVinci then Nvidia cards are a better choice.
